Technical Assistant, BBC South West Ref. 451848
Plymouth
BBC South West is the home of the Spotlight news programme including a Channel Island opt, Inside Out, the Politics Show, Radio Devon and Radio Cornwall. We use modern technology to its best advantage, ensuring we connect to our audience and stay consistently ahead of the field when it comes to breaking top local stories and making links with the area’s diverse communities. We are currently based in the city suburbs, but will be moving to new premises at the historic Plymouth Barbican within the next few years, providing more opportunity to utilise state-of-the-art technology to enhance our programmes and our environment.
As a technical assistant, you’ll work closely with the broadcast engineers. It will be your job to help keep our broadcasts operating smoothly across a range of platforms. You’ll be at the heart of engineering and operational requirements. These include outside broadcasts, studio-based programmes, broadcast technology, TV operations, radio car operation and web technology. You’ll also undertake basic maintenance work, repairs and fault finding, and provide IT support, deliver training and be a point of contact for facilities maintenance.
As well as experience of working in an engineering or technical operation role, you’ll have a track record of active participation, perhaps at amateur level, in a creative area such as sound, video or filming. You must be well motivated, enthusiastic and flexible, have good communication skills and the ability to remain calm and think clearly under pressure. You should have evidence of an interest in broadcast engineering and be a good team player. You’ll have extensive IT skills (preferably in a broadcast environment, e.g. use of editing and playout software) and be able to carry out a number of tasks to help keep the operation running smoothly.
At the BBC we respect each other and celebrate our diversity so that everyone gives their best. The BBC positively encourages applications from all parts of the community and is committed to promoting equality of opportunity.
